SALT LAKE CITY — Now THIS is how movies were meant to be enjoyed.

The Utah Symphony will show six blockbuster/award-winning films on the big screen at Abravanel Hall in the coming year, with the film scores to each performed live-to-picture by the orchestra.

It’s all part of the 2019-20 Films in Concert series being offered by the Utah Symphony.

The Films in Concert series will kick off Sept. 6-7 with “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back in Concert,” featuring the second original installment of the “Star Wars” trilogy, powered by John Williams’ legendary score.

On Nov. 1-2, the symphony performs “Disney in Concert: Coco” with family friendly event featuring Michael Giacchino’s musical score. The Disney Pixar film won Oscars for Best Original Song and Best Animated Feature Film.

Just in time for the holidays, on Dec. 20-21, will be “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in Concert,” with the Utah Symphony performing Nicholas Hooper’s score to the film based on the J.K. Rowling books.

On Feb. 28-29, 2020, audiences will be invited to celebrate what the American Film Institute called “the greatest movie musical of all time.” The symphony will perform the score to “Singin’ in the Rain,” starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds. The music was written by Nacio Herb Brown, with lyrics by Arthur Freed.

“How to Train Your Dragon in Concert” will be presented on April 15, 2020, with the symphony performing composer John Powell’s Academy Award-nominated score to accompany the beloved animated film about dragons and Vikings.

And the final film in the Utah Symphony’s 2019-20 Films in Concert series will be “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in Concert.” Again, a Hooper score — nominated for a Grammy — will be performed to accompany a “Harry Potter” film.

All movie concerts will be held in Abravanel Hall, 123 W. South Temple, in Salt Lake City.

Subscription packages for the Films in Concert series are on sale now at utahsymphony.org. Single tickets for each film start at $29 and will go on sale at 10 a.m. June 14 through the Utah Symphony and ArtTix outlets.
