Return to Paradise

In 2011 “Death in Paradise” brought an interesting paradigm to viewers. An unusual but brilliant Detective Inspector joined a team of police officers on a Caribbean island. Over the years the lead detective changed, and one of them spun off in 2023 for his own series, “Beyond Paradise,” taking place in Britain. Now, the second spinoff, “Return to Paradise” brings viewers to the fictional Australian town of Dolphin Cove, a seemingly somewhat idyllic locale but filled with murders.

Anna Samson stars as DI Mackenzie (Mack) Clarke who has a past with the town. Having been brought up there, she has been gone for several years. Her relationship with the people is often contentious, having left her fiancé Glenn (Tai Hara) at the alter.

Mack returns to Dolphin Cove temporarily while she is under investigation in London by the Metropolitan Police for mishandling evidence, which she strongly denies. She returned home hoping to be cleared of the charges and return to London. On her first day back she finds herself helping out in a murder investigation.

The Senior Sergeant happens to be Glenn’s mother, and Glenn is the local pathologist. So, they are all working together – again.

Each episode involves a murder that Mack is able to solve, thanks to her rather strange methods and unique deductions. Along with her in these efforts are detective Colin Cartwright (Lloyd Griffith), constable Felix Wilkinson (Aaron L. McGrath), and volunteer Reggie Rocco (Celia Ireland). This team is capable, and thanks to Mack, even more successful than they were prior to her return.

The dynamics between the various characters is what makes this an intriguing series. It follows the same characteristics as the other two shows in the franchise. There is the main detective who is unconventional yet brilliant, a newbie who is eager to get involved in the work of the police department, another detective, and plenty of interpersonal relationships. This is the first series in the franchise to have a female in the lead role.

These three shows have the same elements with different characters in different locations. The personal conflicts and relationships are what bring uniqueness to the shows.

While the picturesque locale of the Caribbean is the backdrop of “Death in Paradise,” and a coastal village in England provides the atmosphere in “Beyond Paradise,” the tranquil setting of the New South Wales region in Australia is the place where Mack now finds herself and where her quirky, complex, and odd yet brilliant mind adds to the town’s small police force.

Is Mack “on the spectrum?” Nothing definitive has been said about her other than she is just plain odd. She is definitely socially inept but as the episodes roll on, she tries to be less awkward in social situations.

All six episodes of season one of “Beyond Paradise” are available to stream on BritBox. The season ends with a little cliffhanger, which will hopefully be resolved when season two streams sometime in 2026.

BritBox is available through the internet, a smart-tv app, and as an add-on subscription to Prime Video.
