“Father Brown” returns for season 13, with plenty of intriguing stories as well as all the characters fans of the show have come to love. It is a an easy-going series which, although focusing on crimes and murders, has dedicated viewers sipping hot chocolate and relaxing while the stories play out in the 10 episodes of the season. All of this takes place in the quaint fictional British town of Kembleford.

Mark Williams returns as Father Brown, a man dedicated to the church as well as to justice. That means, although Inspector Sullivan (Tom Chambers) gets frustrated with the Father’s interference, he nevertheless pursues his own investigations to free the innocent and make sure the guilty are punished, even when warned by the inspector to stay out of police business.

Brenda Palmer (Ruby-May Martinwood) is a sweet girl who loves to help out in the church, but mostly with Father Brown’s investigations, and she proves to be quite good at helping him and with her own deductions. And Claudie Blakley is also a big help in both respects. The former Mrs. Devine, now Mrs. Sullivan, must tow a fine line between helping Father Brown while appeasing her inspector husband.

Fans of the earlier seasons will be pleased that Mrs. McCarthy (Sorcha Cusack) is back, but just for the opening episode. And, in another surprise, the international thief Hercule Flambeau (John Light) also makes an appearance.

Kenneth More played the original television Father Brown in the short-lived series in 1974, which only lasted one season. The character is so beloved, the show was resurrected in 2013, and, as stated earlier, is now on its 13th season.

The character of Father Brown first appeared in 1910 in 53 short stories by author G.K. Chesterton. Several movies were produced centering around the inquisitive, good-natured, lovable priest. The first was “Father Brown, Detective,” in which Walter Connolly put on the hassock in 1934. Then in 1954 Alec Guinness stepped into the shoes of the captivating priest.

Throughout all these various stories, Flambeau manages to appear, with Father Brown always trying to save his soul. He is a charmer, and always manages to escape, leaving the priest with a sense of wonder and even appreciation.

Father Brown is sensitive, inquisitive, and intelligent. His cool demeanor manages to calm not only those around him, but also the viewers, as he puts clues together in his mind without any fuss. His instincts are always spot on, even when they clash with the police. His determination to see justice served is always his highest priority, just after his devotion to the church.

Father Brown is a character everyone can enjoy, even non-Christians. He is the epitome of a character that embraces life, love, the world, and good against evil.
