Women in Music will celebrate women through different art forms including poetry, music and the visual arts. More information and tickets at nextensemble.org.In celebration of Women’s History Month, NEXT Ensemble presents “Women in Music,” a night of original poetry and live music by local women, inside Ogden Contemporary Arts on Saturday night.
It’s a rare combination of visual arts, poetry and music together in one night to celebrate “the achievements of women in the otherwise male-dominated world of the arts,” NEXT Ensemble stated on the event page. “Where better to present music and poetry composed and performed by women than in a gallery of visual art created by women?” asked Dan Pack, the new executive director of NEXT.
The nonprofit had been thinking about collaborating with OCA, and when the “LAND BODY” exhibit opened in their gallery it seemed like the perfect time.”It was a beautiful happenstance that the date we presented for Women in Music was the final weekend of ‘LAND BODY,’ and we could not be more excited to be performing in this gorgeous exhibit,” Pack said.
“LAND BODY” explores the connections between the human body and the landscape from the perspectives of 11 female-identifying artists, a curatorial project by Kelly Carper, an independent art consultant, curator and art writer based in Ogden.
In fulfillment of the organization’s efforts to showcase local talent, the performers for Women In Music are all local. Two poets, Wynter Storm and Angelika Brewer, will perform their original work and the music will be a collection of quartets by composers Caroline Shaw and Jessie Montgomery with musicians Marianne Rohbock on first violin, Jeline Barut on second violin, Tara Hoellein on viola and Kaitlin Findlay on cello.
“The music is new and innovative with a lot of energy,” Pack said.
Pack said NEXT wants to create memorable experiences for the community, and collaborating with other artists from other artistic disciplines elevates the concert experience.
“The whole family is invited and encouraged to attend,” Pack said. “All are welcome. Come as you are.”
Women in Music is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at Ogden Contemporary Arts Center. Tickets are $10 for adults, and children under age 18 are free. Learn more about NEXT Ensemble and purchase tickets at nextensemble.org.
