First Bit on Two Bit to be lots of laughs

By Rachel Trotter, Standard-Examiner Correspondent - | Sep 15, 2015

OGDEN — If you want a night of laughs from a variety of Utah comedians, Good Company’s “First Bit on Two Bit” is the show to see.

As the creators and directors at Good Company were deciding on the seasonal show, they wanted to keep things in line with the year’s theme, of “Haha Funny” and also give local comedians a chance to showcase their work and the process behind it. The show runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m. starting September 18 and running through September 27.

“It will be a cabaret show with Utah comedians doing stand-up routines,” said the shows’ director and stage manager, Alicia Washington.

Washington has been working with Brody Mikesell, the creator and host, on the project.

“When Brody moved into town he has always been into stand-up comedy so we figured we could integrate his passion with our theme,” Washington said.

Throughout the year Good Company has been trying to mix up the levels of comedy with each show ranging from absurd to dark comedy, so the idea of letting stand-up comics do their things, seemed fitting, Washington said. The unique thing about the show is that the comedians will use some of their regular stand-up stuff that they have done before while integrating some new stuff that hasn’t been done for audiences.

“We have a lot of great (local) comedians and this gives them a chance to work on raw material. The way it all came together was a perfect opportunity,” Washington said.

Washington noted that people don’t often get to see the background of ingenuity and talent that goes into a comedian’s stand-up routine.

“Here we will integrate that entire process and I think it will be a real engagement for the arts in this community,” she said.

Mikesell will integrate the acts together cleverly as well, Washington added. In the online description of the show it states, “Whether the joke is still being open-miked, fresh off the page, or a killer, the process is as important as the product. Here, the art of bringing an idea to life takes center stage.”

The name of the show also fits in with the fact that 25th Street, where Good Company is located has been infamously called, “Two Bit Street.”

The show runs 60 to 80 minutes with about four comedians per show.

“People will have a chance to see a good variety of performers and get something for everyone,” Washington said.

Washington said the show can be given a PG-13 rating.

“Of course there will be nothing explicit, but there may be some themes and language in the PG-13 area,” she said.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online or at the door. Good Company is located at 260 25th Street. For more information visit Good Company Theatre’s website.
