OGDEN — A few high schools are kicking off the spring performing season a little bit early with shows this weekend and next weekend.

St. Joseph Catholic High School’s upcoming showing of “The Music Man” is unique in that the cast includes not only students from the high school, but also kids from the elementary school as well. Lisa Bartel has six children and stepchildren involved in the production ranging from second to 12th grades. Four of them are cast in the play, and two of them are helping backstage.

“It is wonderful to see them support each other at the theater and at home as they learn their parts — running lines and making suggestions. The family values aspect of this play makes those relationships even stronger,” Bartel said in a news release about the production.

This is the first time theater director Jennifer Hughes has cast all ages in a play and included them in the auditions.

“It truly brings this family-based musical to life. It is fun to watch the opportunities for siblings to grow closer together in return,” Hughes said.

Monica Robbins, a junior, plays the lead role of Marian Paroo. Her seventh-grade sister is in the ensemble.

“It is different and exciting to work with my sister on stage. I have learned that I treat the other younger actresses more like my sisters,” Robbins said. Her mother, Adrienne Robbins, also conducts the professional orchestra. Monica Robbins said it has been good to work with her mother as well.

“She wants me to push myself and hit those key notes in the complicated musical pieces,” Monica Robbins said.
