WILLARD — Old travel trailers have a beauty all their own — and that shiny, silvery allure is something Watt “Orbie” Mungall is dying to show off.

The Willard resident is organizing a rally for vintage travel trailers Sept. 12-15 at Willard Bay State Park, so he’s issuing an early heads-up to clean out those old-style trailers and get ready to participate.

A lot of vintage trailers have sat neglected for years, Mungall said, so the homes on wheels may need some dusting off or a little air pumped into the tires.

But that’s Mungall’s hope — “getting these things back on the road.”

A retired seismographer who enjoys restoring vintage trailers, Mungall is the new Northwest representative for the Tin Can Tourists, an international organization that unites aficionados of old trailers at rallies held across the United States.

“Watt’s Up By The Bay” — Utah’s first Tin Can Tourist rally — will include an open visitation day on Sept. 14, so folks in the community can stop in and take a look at the display of vintage trailers.

Attendance on the other three days will be limited to those registered for the rally.

Mungall said he’s expecting classics from Washington state, Arizona and “no telling where else.” The park’s South Marina has hookups for 48 trailers, plus plenty of “dry,” or no-hookup, camping space, he said.

A vintage trailer is defined as one 30 years or older, of any make or model, said Mungall, who has restored more than a half-dozen of the boxes on wheels.

“Just to be able to see some of these things, I think, will be marvelous,” he said.

The rally will serve as a huge hands-on workshop, where trailer owners can share their skills and expertise in woodworking, electrical repairs and other aspects of restoration.

Mungall tested the waters for this 2013 event by holding an informal rally last September in conjunction with the Willard Round-Up Car Show. About 20 to 25 trailer owners showed up for that gathering, and they expressed an interest in a larger rally, he said.

The cost of the four-day rally is $105, which includes two meals and a required Tin Can Tourists membership.

The admission price for the Sept. 14 open house is not yet determined, but Mungall said he is hoping to negotiate a reduced park entry fee.
