ATV Adventures: Silver King Fire closes some OHV trails, but Marysvale is open
Lynn Blamires, Special to the Standard-Examiner
The Silver King Fire was a huge event currently having a major impact on the town of Marysvale. Fire crews are cleaning up hot spots from the fire that has closed a few miles of trail. To say all the trails on the west side of town are closed is incorrect.
Marysvale is a small town with a little more than 400 people. The OHV community provides as much as 95% of the occupancy in the town’s lodging during the riding season and no wonder; it provides access to some of the best OHV trails in the world.
Sam Steed is a Piute County commissioner. He lives in Marysvale and owns and operates the Rocky Ridge Resort. He is frustrated by the misinformation being spread about trail closures. Reservation cancellations have hurt Marysvale businesses. Here is the truth about closures on the west side:
- Deer Creek (No. 74) is closed.
- Beaver Creek (No. 2) is closed for access to the Tushar Mountains (No. 01), the Silver King Mine (No. 01), the top-end of the Max Reid Trail and the trail over the Kimberlie’s.
- Bullion Canyon is closed.
- The Cottonwood Canyon is closed from the top end at Webster.
Here is Sam’s information on open trails:
- All of the trails on the east side of Marysvale, including Monroe Mountain, Circleville, Junction and the Freemont Trail are open.
- Cottonwood Canyon (No. 77) is open to the point where it is closed at the top.
- The Max Reid Trail (No. 01) is open from the Freemont Indian Museum and to the top. The Kimberlie Trail (No. 13) is open to ride a loop back to the museum.
- Access to Hoover’s and Big Rock Candy Mountain is open from the east side of Marysvale.
- Access to Box Creek Reservoir and Koosharem is open.
- Circleville and Junction trails to Beaver are open.

There is more than meets the eye in the National Geographic Paiute Trail Map. I have been riding the Paiute trails for over 20 years and have learned that those mountains are riddled with more trails than are found on the map.
I will be riding with Steed in October. He has promised to show me more trails on Monroe Mountain than I ever knew existed. If you would like to join us on this adventure, book a room and let me know. I will fill you in on the details. When you ride the Paiute, take plenty of water and keep the rubber side down. Marysvale is open and needs your business.
