The Union Pacific steam locomotive Big Boy No. 4014 is seen Friday, July 19, 2024, in far western Weber County near Little Mountain on its way into Ogden. Hundreds of train enthusiasts staked out spots along Union Pacific tracks throughout the western part of the county to catch a glimpse of what Union Pacific calls the world's largest operating steam locomotive. The 4014 was on display at Union Station in Ogden on Saturday and Sunday. It also will make a "whistle stop" at Forest Street Crossing in Brigham City at approximately 9 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2024.

1. Big Boy No.4014 is Coming to Ogden

Union Station, Ogden, April 18-19, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Northern Utah’s history is tied to the railroads and so it’s understandable to get excited when you get a chance to enjoy railroad history. That will be the case when Big Boy No. 4014 returns in mid-April. “GUESS WHO’S COMING BACK TO OGDEN, UTAH?!

Big Boy No. 4014 and he’s bringing friends! 11 additional cars, and the Golden Spike!” the city website says. It’s part of a celebration planned by Union Pacific, which says on its website that “Union Pacific will join the nation in celebrating 250 years of American independence and innovation this year with its first-ever coast-to-coast steam tour led by the legendary Big Boy No. 4014. The first leg of the tour starts Sunday, March 29, with the Big Boy and several historical passenger cars from Union Pacific’s Heritage Fleet traveling west to California from Cheyenne, Wyoming, the steam locomotive’s homebase.”

2. Ogden Climbing Festival

It’s time to get serious about climbing and the place to be is Ogden. The festival website says “The Weber State University Outdoor Program proudly hosts the Ogden Climbing Festival. The Ogden Climbing Festival is the premier climbing event in the region and brings together climbers from all climbing disciplines to introduce them to the best of Ogden, Utah. The OCF boasts three days of incredible events, from educational climbing clinics for all abilities, stewardship and service opportunities, climbing competitions, and inspiring keynote speakers. The OCF brings together climbers, educators, retailers, and top companies to carry on the rich climbing tradition of Ogden, Utah.”

3. Star Party EKO Adventure Challenge

Willard Bay State Park, April 17, 7-11 p.m.

There are many ways to be a good steward of the land and water in our state, but we don’t often think about being a good steward of the sky as well. A good chance to learn what you can do will be by spending a Friday night at Willard Bay State Park. The park website says: “Explore the night sky with a park ranger while learning about the importance of darkness and how you can help protect it. Telescopes provided, or bring your own. Chairs, blankets, snacks, and insect repellent encouraged.”

For more information, go to stateparks.utah.gov/parks/willard-bay.

Starting at $4.32/week.
