The students of the recent vacation Bible school at Elim Lutheran Church in Ogden raised $300 to give a fish farm to a needy village in Africa through the World Hunger Goodgifts Project of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.?”We wanted to give the kids an opportunity to practice stewardship,” Dave Thomas, president of the congregation, said in a news release. “I thought maybe they would raise $50 to give a needy person a pig, but never in my wildest dreams did I think they would raise $300.”?The children held two fundraisers, singing for their parents and to the Elim congregation, and also contributed money they earned by doing extra chores.?The youth raised $296.97 by the end of the vacation Bible school. A member of Elim gave the last $3.03 to make the fund an even $300, according to the news release.?The money will be sent to the Goodgifts Project at ELCA headquarters in Chicago. It will purchase a community fish farm for an entire African village, pay for two African orphans to receive medical and dental care, and buy two African children shoes to walk to school, the news release states.?Elim Pastor DanaLee Simon said, “It’s amazing what happens when we give kids a chance to teach us.”
