OGDEN — The public is invited to attend this year’s Hanamatsuri, also known as the Flower Festival, at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Ogden Buddhist Church, 155 North St.?The celebration commemorates the birth of Siddhartha Gautama — the prince who later became the Buddha or “Enlightened One.” ?”It’s one of the larger services of the year,” said the Rev. Jerry Hirano. “The big difference is we’ll have a Hanamido — a flower shrine — and we’ll pour sweet tea on the image of the Buddha to represent his birth.”?According to the ancient legend, the universe was filled with joyful music, flowers bloomed and sweet rain fell from the heavens on the joyous occasion of the Buddha’s birth.?The Hanamido, which will be set up in front of the main altar in the church, is a symbol of Lumbini Garden, the Buddha’s birthplace. ?The children of the sangha, or congregation, will dress up in traditional kimonos and costumes and will be featured in the annual Ochigo parade at the beginning of the service.?A program will follow the service. Hirano said the event is one of the more colorful offerings of the church each year.?The Salt Lake Buddhist Temple, 211 W. 100 South, in Salt Lake City, will celebrate Hanamatsuri on April 9. The public is welcome to attend that event as well.
