LDS scholar examines temple symbolism in new book

SPRINGVILLE — David J. Ridges has written several books that have helped people understand scriptures better.

With the release of his newest title, “Temples: Sacred Symbolism, Eternal Blessings (Cedar Fort Publishing and Media, $14.99),” Ridges turns his efforts to helping members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints understand the sacredness of the church’s temple instruction and symbolism.

“Modern temples aren’t just pretty white buildings — they are Heavenly Father’s classrooms,” said a press release from Cedar Fort Publishing. “When church members enter His holy house, the Lord teaches them through symbols so they can understand and retain more of the sacred instruction provided there.”

In this book, Ridges not only helps temple attendees find these symbols within temple walls but brings to light profound symbolism as found in ancient Israel’s tabernacle worship and elsewhere in scripture.

“As readers come to understand the symbols explained in this book, their experience will be redefined with deeper meaning,” said the press release.

Ridges taught for the Church Educational System for 35 years and has taught for 25 years at BYU Campus Education Week. He has taught adult religion classes and Know Your Religion classes for BYU Continuing Education for many years.

He has served as a curriculum writer for the Sunday School, as well as for the seminaries and institutes of religion of the LDS church. He has served in many callings in the church, including gospel doctrine teacher, bishop, stake president and patriarch.

He and his wife have served a full-time mission, training senior Church Education System missionaries and helping coordinate their assignments throughout the world.

“Temples: Sacred Symbolism, Eternal Blessings” is available in bookstores and from online retailers.

Starting at $4.32/week.
