OGDEN — Now is the time to plan to participate this year in Ogden’s Come Together Free Community Meal hosted by the Congregation United Church of Christ Charities planned for Make a Difference Day, Oct. 25, at the Marshall White Center.

Organizers are looking for organized groups, including churches, to call ahead and make arrangements to assist and to make donations of money and goods for the non-profit event.

Donations are encouraged to be made before Oct. 11.

“I think it’s important for all of us to come together to serve the community in which we live,” said  said Kim Harbath, event organizer. “My real joy is to see volunteers come together with a common cause.”

She said the effort is designed to bring people together to give and to care together.

“You see the joy radiate from the faces of the volunteers,” she said. “There is a reward.”

Needed are food and clothing items in good condition such as coats, hats, baby clothes, linens and shoes. Organizers are in need of 600 hygiene kits made especially for people of various ages put into gallon zip lock bags.

“This year we are planning on serving 1,000 people,” said Harbath, noting that no religious message will be offered although many church groups will be behind the effort.

“Last year 800 people were fed; 2,700 pieces of clothing and 2,500 pounds of pet food were given away,” Harbath said. “People received 150 free haircuts and there was live music and entertainment for the children.”

Harbath said last year’s effort drew 140 volunteers; 30 businesses, churches, schools and organizations made donations.

Those interested in donating may call Ogden Congregational United Church of Christ at 801-392-5012 and leave a message for Harbath  or e-mail her at kimharbath@gmail.com.

Donations may be dropped off at the church located at 3350 Harrison Blvd., which is up the hill behind the Key Realty office building, between 10 a.m. and noon Tuesday through Thursday.

For donations that need to be picked up, contact Harbath.

Helping with this event qualifies for community service credit at Weber State University classes that require such hours. The Come Together Free Community Meal is registered through the Center for Community Engaged Learning.

Harbath can help a student through the process of obtaining credit through their participation.
