Gladys Knight talks about custom diamond CTR ring
There’s something that helps remind the “Empress of Soul” to choose the right — and she wears it on her finger.
Seven-time Grammy award winner Gladys Knight recently sat down with LDS Living to talk about her conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and her unique CTR ring.
CTR — which stands for “choose the right” — is an acronym used for LDS Church members as a constant reminder to keep their standards and is often displayed as an emblem in rings. The acronym is usually surrounded by a shield on the ring, and is worn mainly by the Church’s children’s organization or Sunday school, known as primary. However, there are many different designs and customize options available for the rings.
And Knight has her own unique version.
Knight was first introduced to the Church by her children.
“I vividly remember the time in my life when I felt lost, as if something was missing,” she told Hallels. “I was desperately seeking answers and when I finally found the answer, I learned that it was Jesus Christ.”
As a fairly new member she noticed one of her grandchildren wearing a CTR ring.
“One of the kids was wearing a little CTR ring, and it was a little one because they were in Primary then,” she told LDS Living. “And I thought wow, what a concept.”
The singer immediately wanted one of her own and was overjoyed when she found out they weren’t just for children.

“My daughter had a friend that she went to high school with who turned out to be a jeweler,” Knight said. “So I took the basic ring to him, I said, ‘I want a diamond CTR ring.’ And he said, ‘Well, I don’t know. The shape of it kind of limits you.’ And I said, ‘I’m not talking about a diamond ring like a diamond ring, I just want it.’ So he made this for me. And I came back to get it and I’ve worn it ever since.”
Her one-of-a-kind ring helps Knight remember to choose the right no matter the situation, she says.
She believes all people could use the reminder, even if they aren’t members of the Church.
“The whole idea is that we need every little bit of everything we can get to stay on that path, because it’s that narrow,” she said.
One of the standards Knight’s ring most likely helps remind her to keep is modesty. She recently told MSNBC.com that she wants her fellow female entertainers in the music industry to “stand up” and do better.
“We were taught to dress respectfully for our audiences … did you hear me say dress? Not take it off, put it on. I’m just disappointed with all of that,” she said. “But there’s a way to present your gift…. If you’re a singer, make sure you do that. I want my women to stand up.”
Knight is featured on the cover of the September/October issue of LDS Living and is ”on top of the world” with her new gospel album “Where My Heart Belongs” and role in the Lifetime movie “Seasons of Love,” which will hit screens this upcoming holiday season.
