Group shouts no on sustaining vote during LDS Conference

By Sonja Carlson - | Apr 4, 2015

SALT LAKE CITY — A number of shouts were heard in the Conference Center and on live broadcast as President Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the first presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints read the sustaining vote of church leaders at the beginning of the General Conference.

A group called Any Opposed may have been involved. The group issued a press release on its website, http://anyopposed.org, explaining plans to oppose the vote. It says there are concerned members of the church who feel there is a lack of ways to “express feedback, opinions, dissent, or dissatisfaction about the current views, positions and teachings of the LDS Church.”

These concerns directed toward general authorities of the church, including correspondence and petitions, are almost always delegated to bishops and stake presidents, the group said in the press release.

“There are also no venues currently within LDS meetings and activities where these concerns can be voiced, heard, and addressed,” according to the press release. “In fact, the church officially discourages its members from having private meetings or study groups outside of the regular meeting schedule or sanctioned events.”

However, an opportunity for members of the church to sustain or oppose church leaders is available to members during one of the four sessions of general conference, such as the one Saturday.

A tweet from the group’s Twitter account confirmed the action.

Our opposing votes were recognized and we are still in our seats. #anyopposed #ldsconf

After the opposing shouts were heard, President Uchtdorf said the votes “were noted.”

Any Opposed also tweeted that supporters and participants of the group, along with members of the press, were invited to meet in Salt Lake City’s City Creek Park after the session.
