SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints named three new members to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles during the Saturday afternoon session of its general conference on Oct. 3.

The last-announced of the new apostles was Elder Dale G. Renlund. Who is the junior member of the Quorum of the Twelve?  Here are three facts about Renlund.

Doctor

Renlund was a highly trained cardiologist, specializing in heart failure and heart transplants. He earned an MD from the University of Utah and then completed a six-year residency at world-renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital. That’s some heavy-duty medical training.

Professor

As a well-trained cardiologist, Renlund also taught as a professor of medicine at the U of U, simultaneously serving as medical director for the Utah Transplantation Affiliated Hospitals (UTAH) Cardiac Transplant Program.

Church Service

Elder Renlund was called to the First Quorum of the Seventy at age 56 in 2009. (He is now 62.) He also served in the presidency of the Africa Southeast Area for the church. His full-time missionary service as a young man was completed in Sweden.

Bonus Fact: Powerhouse Couple with a Twist

Renlund’s professional gravitas speaks for itself, but he’s only one part of a serious power couple that comes with a twist. His wife, Ruth Lybbert Renlund, is an attorney of nearly 30 years. After some work with the Utah Attorney General’s office, she joined the firm Dewsnup, King & Olsen in 1990 and became a shareholder two years later, according to her DKO bio.

The twist? Married to a cardiologist, Ruth Lybbert Renlund’s bio lists medical malpractice and personal injury as her specialty.
