Family History Moment: Learning new things about great-great-grandpa Peter Affleck
My Affleck cousin asked some of us “cousins” to come to Logan and learn some of the things he had learned about our relative Peter Affleck {1834-1904}. Peter is my great great grandfather. There were five of us in the group. We went to the south part of Logan to a street near 2nd South east of Main called Water Street. We’ve learned that in the late 1800’s, water had been diverted from the Logan River into a canal system. Since there was no electricity in Logan at the time, the water powered machines of various kinds. Peter had two iron foundries on Water Street and a brewery and someone else had a flour mill. It was astonishing that half a mile from where I grew up that all this existed !!
Next, we went to the Logan Daughters of the Utah Pioneers museum. We saw one of the original oxen which was cast by Peter Affleck in his iron foundry. It was one of the 12 oxen which supported the Baptistry in the Logan Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which was dedicated in 1884.
We all had fun learning about our ancestors and our heritage.
