Marty Berlin fell in love with German food and the fast pace of the restaurant industry when he worked side by side with his Uncle Milt.

Milt Berlin brought authentic German recipes back to the United States after serving in World War II. With his wife, Reta, he opened the Mansion House in 1947 in Ogden — serving men’s and women’s clubs, business meetings and private parties such as wedding dinners.

Marty Berlin was in high school when he went to work at the Mansion House in 1974. He left the job after seven years to become a retail meat manager.

That career kept him busy for 20 years, but he retained a dream in the back of his mind to someday run his own meat shop.

“One day, a light turned on, like, what are you waiting for?” Berlin said. He enrolled in Weber State University and earned a bachelor of science in tech sales in 18 months by taking hefty course loads, finishing in 2003.

“Graduating with a bachelor’s degree really opened the doors to getting a job with Certified Angus Beef,” Berlin said. As an executive account manager, he traveled to over 40 states to educate sales staffs about merchandising, cooking methods and the necessary specifications for high quality beef.

“I thought, if I really believe what I am out here teaching, I ought to put it to work in my community,” Berlin said.

The timing was finally right for him to pursue his dream. When he saw the old bus station for lease, he thought it was the perfect spot and convinced the owner to sell it to him.

“We were able to jump in. The idea for a meat shop had expanded over the years. I saw a lot of good things over the years and wanted to bring some good ideas back to my hometown of Ogden,” Berlin said.

In addition to a meat shop, the space includes a small grocery store and a deli.

The menu showcases recipes passed down from Uncle Milt, such as Hungarian goulash ($12.99) with spaetzle and rotkohl; wiener schnitzel ($12.99); sauerbraten ($12.99); sauerkraut ($7.99); and, brats ($5.99).

Uncle Milt’s dilly bread ($.99/slice) is baked fresh daily.

Gourmet sandwiches ($8.25 or $4.99/half) come in selections such as Ben Lomond Peak, with pastrami, mozzarella, tomato, onion, lettuce and remoulade sauce; Egyptian, with black forest ham, muenster cheese, bacon, tomato, lettuce and Dijon mustard; Ogden River, with London broil, roast beef, mozzarella, lettuce, tomato and horseradish sauce; and, 25th Street, with Italian dry salami, sopressata, provolone, red bell peppers, black olives, lettuce and pesto mayo.

Berlin also hopes to help individuals and families looking for a meal on the go with his roast of the day, such as prime rib ($17.99/lb) or tri tip roast ($12.99) along with salads that can be purchased by the pound.

“If you are sitting in an office building wondering what to do for dinner tonight, you can stop by to grab some steaks along with the basics so you don’t have to stop twice. We have a lot of different items priced just like the grocery stores. We have covered what you would need for a basic shopping trip,” Berlin said.

In the future, Berlin plans to organize grilling seminars on the back patio.

“People may think this is a deli right off, and it is. But, it’s more than that. It is a hybrid. The idea is to combine the best meats to make this your specialty meat shop. We also brought in some of those great German recipes,” said Berlin.

He is excited to bring the Berlin family name back to the Ogden restaurant community.
