Opening LoLo Hawaiian BBQ earlier this month wasn’t too big of a stretch for local restaurateur, Felix Shi.

Emigrants from southeast China, Shi and his father, Zuo Feng, opened Fuji Dragon, serving Chinese and Japanese cuisine, in Ogden in 2010.

Shi said a close friend owns a Hawaiian restaurant in California and all of the food served there is delicious.

Shi and Feng decided a Hawaiian BBQ would be a nice addition to Ogden. Their Hawaiian friend enthusiastically shared recipes and trained them in the art of cooking the cuisine.

A few of the same items are offered on the menus at both restaurants Shi and Feng own since Hawaiian cooking is heavily influenced by Japanese culture.

For example, there is overlap in the appetizers gyoza ($2.25) and cheese wontons ($2.25).

A purely Hawaiian dish is spam musubi ($3.59) that mimics sushi with teriyaki grilled spam wrapped in rice and seaweed.

Spam also plays an important role in grilled spam and eggs ($6.99).

The most popular menu item is chicken katsu ($7.55), another Japanese-inspired dish, hand-battered in panko crumbs, fried, sliced and served on a bed of lettuce with tangy, sweet dipping sauce on the side.

Hawaiian BBQ mix ($8.99) gives meat lovers a good sampling of different menu items including barbecue chicken, barbecue beef and kalbi short ribs.

The BBQ beef LoLo plate ($8.35) has grilled slices of beef marinated in a tropical barbecue sauce, served with rice and house salad made from lettuce, cabbage, carrots, onions, edamame, toasted sesame seeds and ginger dressing.

“All of the sauces and dressings are homemade and everything is prepared fresh,” Shi said. Because meals are cooked to order, customers should be prepared to wait during busy times.

The kalua pork is slow cooked every day for dishes like kalua pork and teriyaki chicken combo ($8.55).

Shi’s favorite dish is the island fire chicken ($8.25), marinated in a special blend of spices, grilled with onions and tossed in spicy sauce. “It’s kind of spicy, but not too spicy. It has a very good flavor,” he said.

Korea is another Asian influence found on the menu in the kalbi short ribs ($9.55), tender beef short ribs marinated in Korean barbecue sauce and grilled.

Seafood lovers may enjoy the island white fish ($7.99) breaded in panko bread crumbs or the crispy shrimp ($8.55), served with katsu sauce.

Most entrees are served with rice and homemade macaroni salad.

Shi said it has been fun to have a new undertaking in the restaurant world and to cook a new type of food.
