Warning signs

More than 30 children are diagnosed every day with Type 1 diabetes.

Here are the warning signs of the autoimmune disease, which can lead to kidney failure, nerve damage, adult blindness, non-traumatic amputations, stroke and heart attacks.

• Extreme thirst

• Frequent urination

• Drowsiness or lethargy

• Increased appetite

• Sudden weight loss

• Sudden changes in vision

• Sugar in the urine

• Fruity odor on the breath

• Heavy or labored breathing

• Stupor or unconsciousness
