The Conversation: Paying the price

By Letroy Woods - Special to the Standard-Examiner | Jun 21, 2025

“I bargained with life for a penny,

And life would pay no more,

However I begged at evening,

When I counted my scanty store.”

“For life is a just employer,

He gives you what you ask,

But once you have set the wages,

Why you must bear the task.”

“I worked for a menials hire,

Only to learn, dismayed,

That any wage I had asked of life,

Life would have willingly paid.”

— Jessie B. Rittenhouse

Rittenhouse’s quote suggests that our lives are a direct reflection of ourselves and in relation to what we believe is possible by setting low expectations. A coin’s value is in understanding both sides of it. Contrary to the current paradigms we have agreed upon, we always have a choice.

Free agency is always available. The game of life does not ask whether or not if you want to play. We are thrust into the game at our conception.

Life favors all players to win and to have the greatest of experiences. The game is designed for everyone to win if the rules are understood. First, the price must be defined by each player each time the game is played. Making it to the end of that game being played, there will be the prize that was set by the individual’s intentions awaiting. Playing to win is important as playing to finish is. Time will be a factor in learning how to get good at playing and having grace with oneself in the process. The current conversation each person must lean on is the belief that all things are possible. Take the time to think about the wage you have currently been asking for from life. What has been showing up will be in direct correlation with the thoughts, feelings and vibration of what has been focused on.

Without judgment and criticism, entertain the idea that we do not really know anything about anything. Once the wage is set for what is desired in the heart, bear in mind and heart that a price will need to be paid. Walking through this door a person will be greeted by suffering, pain, joy and wages most formidable ally, freedom. Nobody will fully understand the wage arranged by you with life. Now that some of the rules have been disclosed about paying the price, the choice rests with those who are willing to endure this journey. Why wait tomorrow for what you can have today?

Pay the price and move forward eagerly and with courage. The amount of energy required to live a life of abundance is the same as living a life of lack. Courage, faith and vision are yours and will guide you into a life beyond what the imagination currently believes. These conversations are about showing up with ourselves. The process of paying the price is worth it. Do not take this part of your life for granted, because the alternative is to choose an undesired life. Trust yourself and walk through the door and into your new conversation of abundance.
