Sunday Drive: A thrilling blend of luxury and performance in the 2024 Acura TLX Type S
We always know it is going to be a great week when there is some sort of sport sedan involved. So, when the Acura TLX appeared on our schedule, we knew there would be complete and utter joy for a week, along with questions and looks from others as we navigated the streets of Utah Valley.
The 2024 Acura TLX Type S has hit the market with a blend of power, sophistication and innovative technology, and after a weeklong test drive, it was proved to us yet again this version is a strong contender in the competitive luxury sports sedan segment.
With its striking design, great performance capabilities and an increasing array of high-tech features, the TLX Type S is a testament to Acura’s commitment to delivering a thrilling driving experience while maintaining the refinement expected of a luxury brand.
Design and exterior
As the TLX arrived at our home, it demanded that we pay attention with its aggressive yet elegant styling. The front end features a bold diamond pentagon grille, flanked by Jewel Eye LED headlights that portray a sense of purpose and precision. The sculpted hood and sharp lines running along the body enhanced its athletic stance, while the wider track and lower profile gave it a planted, road-hugging look.
The rear of the Acura was equally impressive, with quad exhaust outlets that hinted at its performance capabilities and a subtle rear spoiler that added a touch of sportiness without compromising the overall design. The 20-inch alloy wheels, exclusive to the Type S, further emphasized its aggressiveness.
Interior and comfort
Getting inside the TLS, we were greeted by a cabin that seemed to blend luxury and sportiness all in one. The interior was adorned with high-quality materials, including perforated Milano leather seats with Ultrasuede inserts, which provided excellent support and comfort no matter where our day took us. The front seats are both heated and ventilated.
We loved the driver-focused cockpit featuring a flat-bottom steering wheel, aluminum paddle shifters and a customizable 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster that provided all the essential information for us at a glance. The ambient lighting system allowed for personalization, with multiple color options to set the mood.
Space was ample in both the front and rear seats, with plenty of legroom and headroom for passengers. The trunk offered 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space, which is competitive for the segment and sufficient for weekend getaways or daily errands, as we found going to the grocery store and running other errands.
Performance and handling
Under the hood, the 2024 TLX Type S boasts a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine that delivered an exhilarating 355-horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. This powerplant was paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission that provides smooth and quick shifts, enhancing both performance and fuel efficiency.
Some would say this version is not a true sports sedan as it did not boast a manual transmission. We, however, liked this better than last year when we drove the manual. We still enjoy a manual, but for a daily driver would prefer an automatic.
The TLX Type S came standard with Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system, which not only improved traction in various driving conditions but also enhanced cornering capabilities by distributing torque between the front and rear wheels as well as between the left and right rear wheels. This resulted in sharper handling and a more engaging driving experience.
The adaptive damper system allowed us to choose between different driving modes, including Comfort, Normal, Sport and Sport+, adjusting the suspension settings to match driving conditions and preferences. In Sport+ mode, the TLX Type S truly came alive, with more aggressive throttle response, tighter steering and a firmer suspension setup that enhanced cornering prowess.
Technology and infotainment
Acura has equipped the TLX Type S with a host of advanced technology and infotainment features. The centerpiece of the dashboard was a 10.2-inch HD display that was controlled via a touchpad interface. While the touchpad may take some getting used to, it was highly responsive and intuitive once we mastered it. The system supported Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa, ensuring seamless connectivity for all our devices.
An ELS Studio 3D premium audio system, developed in collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Elliot Scheiner, delivered an immersive listening experience. With 17 speakers strategically placed throughout the cabin, including in the ceiling, the audio quality was exceptional, making every time out even more of s sensory overload.
Other notable tech features included a wireless charging pad, a head-up display and a surround-view camera system that provided a 360-degree view of the vehicle’s surroundings, making parking and maneuvering in tight spaces a breeze.
Safety and driver assistance
Safety is a top priority for Acura, and the TLX Type S was no exception. It came standard with the AcuraWatch suite of advanced safety and driver-assistance features, which included adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, road departure mitigation and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
The TLX also featured blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, ensuring that drivers are aware of their surroundings and can make safer lane changes and reversing maneuvers.
Fuel economy and sustainability
Despite its powerful engine, the 2024 TLX Type S managed to deliver respectable fuel economy figures, thanks in part to its advanced transmission and aerodynamic design. The EPA estimates fuel economy at 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, which we beat in our spirited week of driving by averaging 22.5 mpg over 425 miles.
Acura has also made strides in sustainability, incorporating eco-friendly materials and manufacturing processes in the production of the TLX. The use of recycled and sustainable materials in the interior, along with energy-efficient manufacturing practices, reflects on Acura’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
In the end
The 2024 Acura TLX Type S was a masterful blend of performance, luxury and advanced technology, making it an awesome choice in the competitive luxury sports sedan market. Its striking design, exhilarating performance and thoughtfully designed interior cater to driving enthusiasts and luxury seekers alike.
With its robust safety features, the TLX Type S was not only a thrilling car to drive but also a reasonable choice for the modern driver. If you’re in the market for a luxury sports sedan that delivers on all fronts, the 2024 Acura TLX Type S is well worth considering.
