‘Incredibles’ offer super life lessons

By London Maynard, Tx. Correspondent - | Jun 17, 2018

It seems crazy that Disney’s movie ”The Incredibles” was first released 14 years ago! With the June 15 release of the highly anticipated sequel, ”Incredibles 2,” I can’t help but think back to some of the important life lessons that I learned from the first movie.

It may seem childish to learn life lessons from an animated Disney film, but there are five lessons I’ve found that we can apply to our lives in some way or another.

But first, here’s a brief recap of what happens during the original film, just to refresh our memories. “The Incredibles” starts out with two superheros known as Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl. These two superheros decide to retire from working as superheros in order to get married and live a normal family life.

This 2004 movie focuses on the adventure faced by Mr. and Mrs. Incredible, along with their three super kids Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack. When the city is faced with a new villain named Syndrome, this family is forced to come out of hiding and be the superheros needed to save the day.

So what lessons can we learn from this superhero family?

• Everybody is unique and has an important part to play

Each person in the Incredible family has a different superpower, and there’s nothing wrong with that! Whether that power be super strength, stretchy ability, super speed or invisibility, each one’s powers are super unique and very useful.

Likewise, when a group of people work on a project together, it’s great when everybody has a different superpower to bring to the table. While some individuals may be more outgoing and always ready to party, others may be more reserved but always finding solutions to the most difficult of problems. Mixing people with different superpowers together allows for a team to be well-rounded and prepared.

Whether you’re working in a group at school, work or anywhere else, it’s important to keep this in mind. Each person’s powers should be utilized to the best of their abilities to help work toward a successful outcome. Don’t forget that everybody is unique and has an important part to play.

• Sometimes your greatest weakness can become your greatest strength

My favorite character is Violet. Some people think this is because we’re both oldest daughters with long dark hair, but the main thing I like about Violet is her powers.

Violet has two different powers — the ability to turn invisible and the ability to create force fields. Violet is a very shy person who tends to protect her emotions. Being a shy and protective person can often be seen as a weakness, but the important lesson to learn here is that sometimes your greatest weakness can become your greatest strength.

• Story continues below video

If students have a difficult time remembering things they learn in chemistry class, for instance, this difficulty may be seen as a weakness. Serious studying is one way a student could overcome this issue. If a struggling student learns how to study, now she has the power of truly knowing how to study on her side. No more last-minute cramming!

Much like Violet did in “The Incredibles,” we can turn our weaknesses into some of our greatest strengths. Sometimes it may be a little difficult at first to see how this is possible, but it really can be done! Doing this will make life easier and much happier.

• Use your superpowers for good, not just to show off

At the beginning of the original movie, Dash is a little bit of a prankster. He often uses his super speed to mess with his teacher without anybody noticing. Dash also always really wanted to race against other boys his age, but his parents wouldn’t let him because they didn’t want him to run too fast and show off his powers. Dash needed to learn how to be a little more humble when it came to his abilities.

I’ve seen this lesson translate directly into one aspect of my life. In school, I’ve always been known as the smart kid. Every time I take a test, other students around me ask if I got 100 percent. Sometimes teachers would even call me out for getting the best score in the class. This has always been a little bit embarrassing because I don’t like the unnecessary attention. Instead of boasting if I do well, I try to keep those kinds of things to myself. It’s important to be proud of yourself and your accomplishments, but there’s no need to go around bragging about them.

While Dash has the amazing superpower of being able to run so fast that you can’t even see him, he learns to stay humble. As he eventually races against other boys his age, he doesn’t show off, and he is always a good sport. We need to remember to use our superpowers for good and not just to show off.

• Never discount anyone’s abilities

The youngest member of the Incredible family is baby brother Jack-Jack. At first, nobody thinks that Jack-Jack has any superpowers, but as the movie goes on, we learn of his real potential and learn we should never discount anyone’s abilities.

Although sometimes we feel inadequate when it comes to completing a task, we should never discount our own abilities either! Believe in yourself and everybody else around you as well. Try to see people as they really are, because everybody is of value. Get to know someone a little bit better before you judge what they’re capable of doing.

As we continue through life, we have the opportunity to meet many new people and make a bunch of new friends. Remember not to judge others’ abilities so quickly. You never know what kind of amazing qualities they have to offer.

• Step out of your comfort zone and take a few risks

The final lesson we learn from “The Incredibles” is not to be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and take a little bit of a risk. All through the movie, each member of the Incredible family is forced to push their powers to the limit and try new things. If they wouldn’t have taken risks such as Mrs. Incredible flying a plane to rescue her husband, or Violet and Dash fighting off security guards on the evil island, the story would have had a different outcome.

It’s important to step outside your comfort zone and try something new in your life. Always look for opportunities to join new clubs, groups and organizations. Trying new things puts a fun little spin on your everyday life that can help you make fantastic memories. It’s important to become a well-rounded person.

Focusing on the everyday things is important, but taking a few risks and stepping out of your comfort zone can make all of the difference! For the Incredibles, it allowed them to save the world. For you, it can allow you to make new friends and become the best person you can be.

Without dropping any spoilers, it’s easy to say that Disney has included many more great life lessons in this summer’s new “Incredibles 2,” but let’s not forget that the lessons we can learn from the first movie are, dare I say, incredible!
