Recently, I had the opportunity to see the new ”Spider-Man: Far from Home” movie. I went with my friend, who is also a huge Marvel fan, and we stressed together over Peter Parker for two hours.

Before you read any farther, be aware my review of this film, released in July, contains a few spoilers.

“Far From Home” is basically about Peter’s return after Thanos wiped out half of the universe with “The Blip.” Peter (Tom Holland) decides to go on a school vacation to Europe, and tries to forget his Spider-Man alter ego. While there, he meets up with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), who uses the young hero to help get rid of some monsters known as The Elementals. An alternate universe hero named Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio ({a class=”fl” href=”https://www.google.com/search?q=Jake+Gyllenhaal&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAOPgE-LUz9U3MCwpM4pXAjONsorN4rVMspOt9NMyk0sy8_MSc-JL8zLLUouKU5GEkjMSixKTS1KLrApyEitTUxSSKhex8nslZqcquFfm5KTmZSQm5gAA8V_dLGAAAAA&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi_tM-d9eDjAhUDY6wKHcncB4wQmxMoATAvegQIDRAH” data-ved=”2ahUKEwi_tM-d9eDjAhUDY6wKHcncB4wQmxMoATAvegQIDRAH”}Jake Gyllenhaal{/a}), helps Spider-Man, and even aids the kid in his personal life.

Soon, Peter finds out that Mysterio is a fake, and is merely a scientist who specializes in illusions. He tries to stop him and get back Tony Stark’s glasses; a pair that Tony left specifically for Peter to have. The glasses control missiles and drones, and Peter has to avoid all of these to even get close to Mysterio and try to defeat him.

I loved this movie! It was just what I needed after the emotional rollercoaster that was ”Avengers: Endgame,” and having Peter Parker’s peppy personality on screen was such a relief. There were a lot of classic Marvel jokes, followed by classic Marvel action.

The movie did a great job of showing the audience exactly what being a teenager with superpowers is like. Peter was adamant the whole time, saying that he was just on vacation, and that he didn’t want anything bad to happen to his friends. He bought a special gift for one of his friends, also his crush, MJ (Zendaya), and when he had to go fight Mysterio, he asked someone to give it to her if anything bad happened to him. He always put other people in front of himself, even if it meant he would die.

Also, the illusions and CGI were just top-notch. There is a scene where Mysterio uses his illusions to confuse Peter, and I have to admit, they confused me too. I couldn’t tell what was real and what wasn’t.

Marvel is always really good at making the audience love their characters, and when the illusions were dropped and Peter got hit by a train, the whole theater felt that. We felt the betrayal, the pain and the confusion from this whole scene.

Peter had to mature as a person in this movie too. He’s always been quick to trust and to make opinions, and this time, it taught him his lesson. He trusted Mysterio, who turned out to be a fake and betrayed Peter. Peter had to deal with his mistake and learn from it, and he did just that. He knew he had done something stupid, and he tried to make it better. Because that’s what heroes do.

“Far From Home” was all about who would be the next Iron Man. Everyone expected Peter to be the one — even Peter expected it. But he couldn’t. He’s Spider-Man, not Iron Man.

This message got me to thinking. Peter Parker will never be the next Iron Man; he’ll never get even close. But Peter will be the next Tony Stark. We see him using lessons Tony taught him; Tony is the one Peter turned to in times of trouble.

Our famous, favorite Avenger is gone. But Peter is ready to take that place. It’s what Tony would’ve wanted.
