Obama shares new insights in ‘Becoming’

By Sara Tesch tx. Correspondent - | Feb 24, 2019

”Do we settle for the world as it is, or do we work for the world as it should be?” — Michelle Obama

To start off 2019, I decided to read more books. I enjoy reading a lot, but it seems like I’ve been rereading some of the same books for a while, so I did some research and found some new books to try.

“Becoming” by Michelle Obama was a book that caught my eye. Autobiographies are very interesting to me. This book, which came out in November from Crown Publishing Group, is full of touching moments, entertaining stories and new insights into the former First Lady’s life. Born and raised in Chicago, Michelle grew up as a kind, hardworking girl who enjoyed spending time with her family. She attended Harvard University and began working at a law firm.

One thing I really enjoyed about this book is Michelle’s openness. She tells her story in a rich, colorful way, and it was very eye-opening. Throughout the course of the book, her relationship with Barack Obama unfolds, which was very sweet to observe. Michelle has a very tender and caring relationship with her two daughters, Malia and Sasha, and she sacrificed much to help raise and provide for them. Mrs. Obama includes many fun details in her writing and I feel that she is a very good story teller.

One of my favorite things about this book was how beautifully Michelle described her daughters when they were born. For instance, she wrote, “Barack and I studied little Malia, taking in the mystery of her rosebud lips, her dark fuzzy head and unfocused gaze …”

I would definitely recommend this autobiography to anyone looking for an excellent read.
