Spring break on the cheap

By Morgan Wyatt tx. Correspondent - | Mar 24, 2019

Rain or shine, spring break can amount to one of two things: a relaxing, fun time with family, friends or just by yourself — or the most boring week of the entire year.

But you don’t need to plan an exotic trip to enjoy the time off. Here are 10 ideas to bust the boredom of spring break without breaking the bank.

Go to the zoo.

  1. OK,
  1. so maybe this one isn’t exactly a rain or shine activity. But it’s still super regardless of the weather! Go see the animals and learn the random facts the zoo has posted about them everywhere. There’s always fun to be had at the zoo — just make sure you’re wearing good shoes for all that walking around.

Plan a picture scavenger hunt.

  1. Grab a friend, a disposable camera and a list of things to find in either Ogden or Salt Lake City and take off! You and your friend can go all over the city taking pictures with the painted horses, the Capitol building or anything in between. Afterward, you can choose to get the photos developed and look back on them later.

Try new restaurants.

  1. You would not believe the number of locally owned restaurants around here, but once you eat at one, you’ll see it every time. There are small cafes and restaurants all over Utah! Some of them have live music playing and all of them have pretty impressive food. Sample a few; one’s sure to become your new favorite.

DIY something.

  1. Take an old dresser, a rundown desk or an old pair of jeans and make it into something new and cool! Make a dresser into a new chair, a desk into a makeup vanity, an old pair of jeans into a new tote bag. The possibilities are endless for a fun little project with supplies you already have at home. Let your creativity shine!

Learn a new skill.

  1. Sewing, cooking, knife-throwing, riding a unicycle backward while holding a cat on your head … there are so many new skills to learn! Spring break means only a week to choose one and get it down. I mean, you can definitely continue growing your skills after, but mastering this new skill will definitely take up a lot of time during spring break.

Start a tea garden.

  1. Most teas can be grown in a Mason jar at home. Get a jar of dirt, order some seeds off of Amazon and grow your own tea! Granted, this won’t take up too much time, but it’ll still be fun!

Organize a family game night.

  1. Get together with the fam or the squad and set up some games. Get competitive. Get pizza. Take the dub. All that other stuff. Just have fun with the people you love playing games that don’t involve a screen. Play Clue or Spoons or Cards Against Humanity or any fun game that you wanna play; just do it with some fun people.

Discover ice blocking.

  1. Assuming all snow is gone by spring break, try sledding’s backward cousin: ice blocking. Go to the store, buy a block of ice, take it out of the plastic covering, and ride it down a grassy hill. Sounds silly, sounds cold. But seriously, so fun.

Go to a park.

  1. I know, I know, you’re too old for that stuff. Trust me. Get a kite, a picnic and go to a park. Roll down the hill, fly the kite, swing on the swings until you think you might just flip over the crossbar like you always dreamed of doing. Then go get some ice cream and think about how much fun you had. Go be a kid for a day.

Try a dollar store adventure.

  1. Tons of gadgets that are either useless now or will be after the first use? All for a dollar? Sign me up! Go to the closest dollar store, give yourself $5 and choose some kind of goal. Make a meal, an outfit, a college survival kit, literally anything. You can find it all at the dollar store.

There you have it — and no excuse for boredom on this spring break.
