Fraudsters ‘spoof’ calls from Utah tax commission to scam taxpayers’ money
If you get a call and the caller ID indicates it’s from the Utah State Tax Commission, don’t be fooled — it could actually be a scammer.
Telephone fraudsters have taken up to “spoofing” technology to falsify caller ID information in order to scam taxpayers into handing over their money. A press release from the Utah State Tax Commission on Thursday warned taxpayers to be on guard for such calls.
“We received phone calls yesterday from taxpayers saying they received suspected phone calls from what appeared to be the Tax Commission’s customer service 801-297-220 number,” said Charlie Roberts, tax commission spokesperson, in the press release.
The scammers ask for personal identifying information, even threatening them with criminal prosecution or the seizure of their home or bank account. The Utah State Tax Commission doesn’t engage in these tactics — Roberts said that it “will never initiate a call without first sending at least one letter,” according to the press release.
In the case of such scams, the tax commission advises people to tell the caller they will call the agency directly to resolve the issue and then hang up. They are also encouraged to contact the agency’s fraud specialist at 801-297-3822.
The Utah State Tax Commission isn’t the only proxy fraudsters use; scammers often make similar calls and threats under the guise of the Internal Revenue Service, demanding the recipients’ financial information to pay off tax debts. Utah IRS spokesperson said that such scammers were ”getting even more clever” and using new tactics in October 2015.
