OGDEN — An individual in custody at the Weber County Jail facility on 12th Street died following a medical event over the weekend, the Weber County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.

Per a press release from the department, the 71-year-old died Saturday at approximately 6 a.m. after suffering “a medical event that was not self-inflicted.”

The death is currently under investigation and will follow the Weber County Critical Incident Protocol. The Weber County Attorney’s Office is heading up the investigation, according to the release.

Weber County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Lt. Joshua Marigoni told the Standard-Examiner that the identity of the deceased would remain undisclosed pending the notification of their next of kin and also the completion of the ongoing investigation.

Marigoni added that no other information about the incident would be released at this time. Meanwhile, the department offered its condolences and praised those who responded to the incident.

According to the release: “The Weber County Sheriff’s Office extends condolences to the family of the deceased. We also thank all of the staff members and first responders that diligently perform their duties and assist with difficult situations such as these.”

Following the death of another inmate in January, Marigoni said that the facility strives to be prepared for every possible medical emergency.

“We have a medical department that’s staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and several of our deputies are medically trained,” he told the Standard-Examiner. “(They have) first responder training, so they can get in there and start CPR or whatever life-saving measures are immediately necessary until medical personnel get there.”

Starting at $4.32/week.
