Monday morning, the Salvation Army of Ogden sent out a press release announcing that the residence — which is slated to open its doors in October — is now accepting applications from prospective residents.
“Located at 2655 Grant Avenue in Ogden, the senior housing consists of 52 one-bedroom apartments, each with a kitchen, bath, and comfortable living quarters to encourage independent living,” the release said. “Residents pay only 30 percent of their income for housing, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) pays the difference.”
The release adds that the residence — which are open to seniors 62 and older — will feature several amenities beyond the apartments themselves.
“The senior housing will offer on-site activities such as case management/service coordination, social gatherings, recreational activities, and educational workshops,” the release said. “The residence includes seven open lounge areas, a large community room, a library, a wellness room, an exercise room, a private gathering room, a laundry room, a garden area with raised planter boxes for tenants, outdoor patio and an on-site surface parking lot with 43 stalls.”
The Standard-Examiner reached out to the Salvation Army for additional comment on the opening of applications for the Ogden Silvercrest Senior Residence but did not receive any before press time.
However, during the groundbreaking for the facility in May 2024, Maj. Nesan Kistan — Salvation Army Intermountain Division commander — said building a new residence like this is a huge step for the charitable organization in carrying out its ongoing mission.
“We have always existed to help those in need,” he said. “The vulnerable in our community — our older people — need our support. One of the biggest challenges for the older generation — as we get older, our bodies age. … We struggle to move, but more importantly, we lose community. As we get older, those that we love, those that we appreciate, those individuals that we value — they seem to fade away out of our lives.
“This Silvercrest that’s going to happen right behind me is a place to create community. It’s a place where we help those that are vulnerable in our community find hope again and have a community in their last days of life to celebrate and enjoy their life, and to have friendships and to bridge the gap of one of the biggest challenges our society faces, which is social isolation.”
Applications will be accepted via email or fax and must be received by Aug. 22, after which they will be entered into a lottery to determine wait list position. Those interested in requesting an application can call (562) 491-8714 or by email at mai.yokes@usw.salvationarmy.org.
