Officers from Weber State University’s police department and first responders from around Northern Utah respond to an active-shooter drill at WSU’s Ogden campus Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023.OGDEN — Weber State University officials are warning the public that the presence of several first responder assets on campus Wednesday morning are nothing to be alarmed about.
On Tuesday, the university emailed a statement notifying the public of a training exercise set for Wednesday from 9 a.m.-noon at the school’s Ogden campus.
“During this time, the public may notice multiple emergency vehicles from various cities and agencies, and personnel on and around campus as they participate in the scenario,” the statement said. “This is a planned training event, and there is no need for concern.”
WSU News Coordinator Rachel Badali told the Standard-Examiner in an email Tuesday that several entities will be participating in the exercise.
“Local police, fire, and emergency management personnel are participating, including teams from Weber and Morgan counties,” she said. “Mock patients will also be transported by ambulance to McKay-Dee Hospital and Ogden Regional Medical Center.”
She added that training exercises like this aren’t new to the university.
“The university regularly holds exercises and trainings that focus on safety and preparedness,” she said. “While this is a drill, the lessons, experience, and continuous improvement that come as a result are real.”
Badali added that holding exercises that test university and local first responders are important and go a long way toward preparing them for responding to real emergencies.
“A full-scale exercise like this is such an important way to test response and coordination,” she said. “WSU police regularly interact with their counterparts in the community, and this is an opportunity to work together and ensure all teams are prepared to save lives.”
