WASHINGTON TERRACE — A handful of houses were temporarily evacuated while crews removed a box of old mining explosives in Washington Terrace on Monday morning.

According to a press release by the Weber County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were summoned to a residence around 8:45 a.m. Monday after potential explosives were found during an ongoing project.

“Landscapers working in the area of 4700 S 175 W were digging in a yard and found suspicious looking items in a box buried in the dirt,” the release said. “The landscapers suspected the items were explosives and evacuated the area with the homeowners.”

Deputies from the Weber County Sheriff’s Office were joined by responders from the South Ogden City Police, Ogden City Police, Washington Terrace Fire Department and the Davis County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad.

“Residents in a limited area around the scene were evacuated, Bonneville High School and Washington Terrace Elementary School were put into secure status, and Rocky Mountain Power shut off electricity to the area as a precaution,” the release continued. “Bomb techs retrieved and secured the suspicious items, which were confirmed to be explosives. Four pieces of mining explosives were recovered, and are suspected to be several decades old.”

Lt. Sean Endsley with the Weber County Sheriff’s Office told the Standard-Examiner that residents were allowed to return after around an hour.

He added that it’s unknown why the explosives were there and that there hadn’t been any historical mining activity in that specific area.

“These would’ve had to have been buried by somebody in the dirt,” he said. “They’re going to have to go back and try to figure out the lot numbers to determine exactly how old they are, but based on what they were seeing at the scene, they thought they were at least a few decades old.”

The press release said there is no ongoing threat to public safety at this time and that power has since been restored.

“We are thankful for the quick and safe resolution to this incident,” the release said. “If you come across suspicious packages or possible explosives, please remember to not touch or disturb the items, quickly evacuate the area, and call 911.”
