WEBER COUNTY — The victim of Saturday’s fatal drowning incident at Causey Reservoir in eastern Weber County has been identified.

According to a press release from the Weber County Sheriff’s Office sent Monday afternoon, Angel Harris, 23, of Delaware, had been cliff jumping at Causey Reservoir on Saturday afternoon when he failed to resurface. Harris was stationed at Hill Air Force Base.

Weber Area Dispatch first began receiving 911 text messages about a drowning at Causey Reservoir around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Deputies of Weber County Sheriff’s Office, Weber Fire District, and AirMed responded to the area, but could not locate Angel during the initial response,” the release said. “Weber County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue responded as well, along with resources from Ogden City Fire Department, Riverdale Fire Department, and Utah Department of Natural Resources.”

The release added that dive teams spent several hours searching the reservoir.

“At approximately 9:10 p.m., a Department of Natural Resources remote-operated vehicle located Angel’s body in an area of water approximately 48 feet deep,” the release said. “Divers recovered Angel’s body, and he was transported to the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner.

“The on-scene investigation and follow-up so far has shown that Angel was cliff jumping at the time he entered the water and drowned. He was not wearing a life jacket.”

Lt. Sean Endsley of the Weber County Sheriff’s Office told the Standard-Examiner on Monday that cliff jumping at Causey Reservoir has been a concern for authorities.

“People that visit Causey do commonly cliff jump into the water,” he said. “The cliff jumping itself is not necessarily illegal; however, doing so without a lifejacket is. We have a major problem with that. Most people who are cliff jumping are not wearing a lifejacket.”

He said this was the first drowning incident reported at Causey Reservoir this season and that he was unsure of when the last fatal incident occurred there.

Endsley said the thoughts of responders are with the family.

“We’re very thankful for all of the agencies and resources that assisted, of course, the dive teams for all of their work,” he said. “Our hearts go out to the young man’s family. Obviously, this is a horrific and very unexpected loss, so our thoughts are with them.”

The press release ended by asking the public to keep water safety in mind and noted that lifejackets are required for any water activities on Causey Reservoir.
