WASHINGTON TERRACE — Authorities and Weber School District officials are asking for the public’s help in solving a vandalism case.

According to a press release from Lt. Sean Endsley of the Weber County Sheriff’s Office, the currently under construction Roosevelt Elementary School in Washington Terrace was targeted by vandals in the early hours Thursday. Security camera stills from the scene that were included in the press release show four people wearing hoodies and masks wandering one of the hallways just after midnight Thursday.

Weber School District spokesman Lane Findlay told the Standard-Examiner on Friday that the vandals sprayed graffiti on several walls throughout the structure.

“The damage is pretty extensive,” he said. “It’s going to require quite a bit of cleanup work, some repainting and it’s frustrating in the sense that we’re getting ready to open this new school. It’s actually scheduled to open for the new school year and we’re hoping that it’ll be pretty much completed by the first part of August. There’s been a lot of work and a lot of excitement over this new school being built in Washington Terrace — replacing the old Roosevelt Elementary. It’s disappointing to see these kinds of things happen.”

He said that the vandalism isn’t expected to hamper construction efforts or necessitate a later opening date.

“We’re still on schedule — it’s just the inconvenience now of having to go back and do a lot of cleanup and repainting on some of these areas,” he said. “It should not affect the opening of the school.”

The Weber School District is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the people responsible.

Lt. Colby Ryan of the Weber County Sheriff’s Office told the Standard-Examiner that there was no new information as of Friday afternoon.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Weber County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Bureau at 801-778-6631, submit an online tip at www.webercountyutah.gov/sheriff in the “See Something Say Something” section or call Weber Area Dispatch at 801-395-8221.
