MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE — The long wait for a new Amazon delivery station in Northern Utah is now officially over.
Though it’s been fully operational since earlier this spring, Tuesday marked the delivery station’s ribbon cutting, during which local officials and Amazon representatives could celebrate the business’s arrival in town.
“It’s a proud day for Marriott-Slaterville,” proclaimed Mayor Scott Van Leeuwen during the short ceremony.
The 181,500-square-foot facility is set on 51 acres of land and began full operations April 2.
“It’s part of Amazon’s last-mile logistics,” Christopher Young, the new delivery center’s manager, told the Standard-Examiner. “We receive customers’ packages and orders on-site on a daily basis. From here, we end up processing the packages down our conveyance system. They will be sorted for the day and, from there, they’ll get sorted to their routes where our associates go ahead and pick these routes for the drivers that come in on a daily basis.”
He said the goal of the facility is to process more than 360,000 packages per week with about 200 vans dispatched per day. Currently, the facility employs just over 160 people, a number Young says can expand during peak events such as Prime Days and the holiday season.
Additionally, there are some firsts for the Marriott-Slaterville delivery station.
“This site launched with what we call ADTA (auto divert to aisle) system,” he said. “The system will end up bringing the packages as they come down conveyance and it will sort it to the correct aisle where the associates are stowing those aisles.”
The delivery station also is the first in the country to serve parts of three states at a time with deliveries carried out to parts of Idaho, Wyoming and Northern Utah.
It’s not just the people who work at the delivery station and customers in the surrounding area that will benefit, either.
Currently, more than 60% of the sales in Amazon’s store are from independent sellers, most of which are small or medium-sized businesses.
Among the local sellers utilizing Amazon’s services is Sylvia Kapsandoy, owner of Amboseli Foods of Layton, which is sold under the brand USimplySeason.
“We’ve been using fulfillment by Amazon for a little bit over 10 years,” she told the Standard-Examiner. “That’s been one of the (things) that’s helped us grow our brand visibility and being able to access nationwide customers.”
Young said the new center will be huge for the area.
“It improves overall career opportunities for folks that live in the area,” he said.
