SYRACUSE — Like many of the communities up and down the Wasatch Front, Syracuse has seen massive growth in recent years — a point driven home by the recent opening of the West Davis Highway and dedication of the Syracuse Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In a bid to keep that growth — along with future expansion — a little bit safer, the Syracuse Fire Department met a milestone in its own proliferation Friday with the dedication of Station 32, the city’s second fire station.

On Friday, a dedication ceremony was held for the new fire station, located on South Bluff Drive and adjacent to the Jensen Nature Park. This was followed by an open house that allowed the public to tour the new facility.

Syracuse Deputy Fire Chief Jo Hamblin told the Standard-Examiner that the station has been a long time in the making.

“It’s to help with call volume — to help reduce call volume — also for response times,” he said. “The biggest thing is, with (state Route) 177 bisecting our city, we’ve put a station on each side as well, so we’ve got emergency response on both if we do have a natural disaster or something like that.”

He said that five firefighters will be stationed at the new station at any one time with that growing to eight as growth continues.

According to a press release on the new station, the 17,153-square-foot facility is situated on 3.14 acres of land and features four apparatus bays. The new station also includes a gym, living quarters, training spaces and administrative offices. Friday’s public open house allowed visitors to visit all of these spaces along with giving them a chance to admire some of the Syracuse Fire Department’s rescue equipment.

Hamblin said the new station will be a huge asset to the community.

“With the growth that’s going on, construction slows response times down,” he said. “Now that we’ve got two stations, we can respond faster. Also, this part of Syracuse that we’re in now, it will reduce response times because we bring people closer to it. The station’s closer to those emergencies. As the growth goes, we’ll continue to get more and more people here. It’s looking to the future with that as well.”

He said opening a new fire station is an exciting time in the department’s history.

“It’s been a lot of effort, a lot of time put into it, a lot of thought,” he said. “We’re very excited to get it going.”

Hamblin said Fire Station 32 will officially begin regular operation on the morning of June 29.

Starting at $4.32/week.
