Crowds gather for the grand opening of Christmas Village after the Electric Light Parade in Ogden on Saturday Nov. 25, 2023.OGDEN — Ogden’s Christmas Village has a chance to shine against some very famous competition this year.
In a Facebook post this week, Ogden City announced that its annual Christmas Village is among the nominees in USA Today’s 10BEST competition for “Best Public Holiday Lights Display.”
“Christmas Village in Ogden, Utah, is a beloved community offering that’s free to the public,” the 10BEST site’s description reads. “Their opening day features a Santa Run and Holiday Electric Light Parade, as well as a ceremony with Santa and fireworks. Guests can visit the village anytime during the holiday season to take photos with Santa or simply bask in the magic.”
In total, 20 nominations can be voted on from across the country, including the Temple Square display in Salt Lake City, the Capitol Holiday Tree at the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison and the Circle of Lights in downtown Indianapolis. But Ogden’s Christmas Village is also facing off against one of the most well-known holiday displays in the country — the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree in New York City.
People will be able to vote once per day through Dec. 1. As of Friday evening, Ogden was in second place in voting.
Ogden City communications director Mike McBride told the Standard-Examiner it takes a village to make Christmas Village a possibility.
“The Christmas Village committee and the Ogden City public services staff put a great deal of care and time into making Ogden’s Christmas Village among the best in the country,” he said. “It is an experience that Utahns look forward to every year and are proud to have in their home state. Every year that team ensures that there are new features that keep the public eye and give our community something wonderful to look forward to each year. This year the Giving Machine will return to the village where people can make donations that will have wide impacts that benefit our community and beyond.”
He said this year’s village, now in its 63rd year, will feature nearly one million lights and 57 cottages.
This year’s Christmas Village will open on Nov. 29 and will be open nightly from 5-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 5 p.m.-midnight each Friday and Saturday. The final day will be Jan. 1, 2026.
