OGDEN — The Ogden City Police Department is addressing two separate discharge of firearms incidents that occurred in Ogden on Saturday evening.
In a lengthy Facebook post marked as “CHIEF’S MESSAGE ON RECENT INCIDENTS” that was submitted Sunday afternoon, the department talked about two incidents from the previous night.
Early in the post, Ogden Police Chief Jake Sube noted that neither incident resulted in injury to members of the public.
“Before getting into the details, I want to say that we are incredibly grateful that no one was injured as a result of these incidents,” he said. “Despite the fortunate outcome, this type of conduct is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in Ogden. Those who choose to endanger the lives of our residents through the reckless and indiscriminate use of firearms are not welcome here. If you engage in this type of conduct, you can be assured that we will leverage all of our available resources to identify, locate, arrest, and prosecute you to the fullest extent allowable by law.”
He added that the Ogden City Police Department remains committed to its mission.
“To the law-abiding citizens of Ogden: We know these types of events are highly concerning,” he said. “We want you to know, however, that we have and will continue to aggressively work to prevent this behavior in our city. Our officers are highly trained, capable, and prepared to act — a fact which contributed to the near-immediate arrests in both of these cases.”
Sube expressed his gratitude for the officers who helped resolve each incident.
“Finally, I want to personally thank those officers who were involved and contributed to the successful resolution of these incidents,” he said. “Thank you for your commitment to be out actively patrolling our streets and neighborhoods so that you are in a position to quickly respond when needed. Thank you for your relentless pursuit of criminals who threaten the safety of our residents, even when that pursuit puts your own safety at risk. Your efforts are commendable, and you should be proud of the work you did last night — I certainly am.”
Incident 1
At around 6:45 p.m. Saturday, a woman called 911 to report that she’d been driving in the 700 block of Grant Avenue when she spotted a male standing in the roadway. After trying to navigate around the man, the woman reportedly heard what sounded like a gunshot and drove quickly away from the scene before calling 911.
“An officer in the area simultaneously heard what he believed to be two gunshots,” the Facebook post said. “He responded to the location of the noise and observed a male fleeing on foot into the back yard of a nearby residence. The male was not immediately apprehended, so several officers responding to the area set up a perimeter to prevent the suspect’s escape. Members of the Ogden-Metro SWAT team, Ogden-Metro Gang Unit, Crime Reduction Unit, and Ogden Police Department K9 Unit immediately responded to assist in the search for the suspect.”
Soon after, a man fitting the suspect’s description was found, confronted and arrested. The suspect is identified as 23-year-old Tyrone Smith, who over the course of the investigation, admitted to firing two shots into the roadway.
“As a result of his actions, Smith was arrested and booked into the Weber County Jail on several charges, including felonious discharge of a firearm, failure to stop at the command of a law enforcement officer, possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, public intoxication, and possession of drug paraphernalia,” the Facebook post said.
Incident 2
Several hours later, though an exact time is not given in the description, several 911 calls were received of gunshots in the parking lot north of businesses in the 200 block of 12th Street.
“Officers in the area observed a motorcyclist matching the suspect’s description. A traffic stop was attempted, but the driver failed to yield,” the Facebook post said. “Given the severity of the reported crime, a vehicle pursuit was initiated. Moments later, the suspect male lost control and crashed his motorcycle into a fence bordering the apartment complex at 1325 Lincoln Avenue. The driver, who was subsequently identified as 19-year-old Taison Palmer, was quickly apprehended. Arresting officers located and recovered an AR-style rifle at the scene of the crash.”
Following an investigation, Palmer was booked on several charges.
“He was arrested and booked into the Weber County Jail on several charges, including multiple counts of felonious discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a restricted person, failure to stop at the command of a law enforcement officer, obstruction of justice, tampering with evidence, DUI, use or possession of marijuana, consumption of alcohol by a person under 21, driving on a suspended license, operating a vehicle without insurance, operating a motorcycle without a motorcycle endorsement, reckless driving, speeding, and multiple stop sign violations,” the post said.
