That means it’s time to think of Ogden’s Christmas traditions.
Specifically, Ogden’s annual Holiday Electric Light Parade. Though set for Nov. 29, Ogden City put out a press release this week calling for 127 volunteers to help make sure the parade and all the events surrounding it run smoothly.
Ogden City Marketing & Communication Coordinator Regina Esparza told the Standard-Examiner on Wednesday that volunteers are a key element of the annual parade.
“We’re looking forward to having over 50 floats again this year, like we always do,” she said. “As for volunteers, we are looking for people to help us work with the disbanding area, with staging the floats between 20th and 22nd Street and then people to help us throughout 24th all the way down to 29th Street to make sure that everyone is cautious with the floats and everything that is happening.”
She said that volunteer spots have traditionally been very popular.
“We’ve had quite a significant amount of people always wanting to volunteer,” she said. “Sometimes people aren’t really wanting to come out in the snow, but so far, the past couple years have been pretty good. We’ve had a great amount of people coming in to help. Everyone gets a volunteer sweatshirt when they do come out.”
According to the release, volunteer roles and requirements are as follows:
- “Help keep parade spectators on the sidewalk and out of the street
- Walk alongside a float, helping to ensure safety along the route
- Must commit to arriving at 3:00 p.m. and staying until approximately 7:00 p.m.
- Ability to stand for long periods, walk multiple city blocks and work outdoors in cold weather is required
- Volunteers must be 16 or older. Children under 16 cannot volunteer but may accompany an adult as a ‘helper'”
Volunteer check-in will be at 3 p.m. on Nov. 29 at the Ogden Amphitheater. Volunteers will receive a sweatshirt, reflective vest and safety flag.
Esparza said city personnel are excited for this year’s festivities.
“The community really loves this event and we hope to make it an even bigger one and better one for everyone that comes out,” she said. “The holiday season is basically already here. We look forward to all of the events, but this is one event with all the holiday spirit. It gets everyone excited to hear the music, to see the lights, the downtown lit up. Over 10,000 people show up for this event and it’s something we look forward to every year.”
