OGDEN — Weber State University’s 27th annual Unity Conference has been abruptly canceled just a day before it was set to start.

On Wednesday afternoon, WSU news coordinator Rachel Badali informed the Standard-Examiner that this year’s Unity Conference — themed “Redacted: Navigating the Complexities of Censorship” — had been canceled. The two-day conference was set to begin on Thursday.

When asked why the conference had been canceled, Badali directed the Standard-Examiner to a statement on the Unity Conference’s website about the cancellation.

“This was not a decision we made lightly,” the statement reads. “After careful consideration of concerns raised by conference planners and participants, we have determined we cannot in good conscience deliver the high-quality, meaningful experience that our community expects and deserves. That said, in keeping with the spirit of the conference theme, we remain committed to navigating these complexities and hope to continue the conference in the future in a way that fully reflects our mission and values.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, especially for those who have already made travel plans, submitted proposals, or dedicated time to prepare. We truly appreciate your enthusiasm and support for the conference and its important theme.

“We look forward to finding new ways to gather, learn, and grow together in the spirit of unity.”

The statement concludes by directing anyone with questions to contact the university at weberstateuniversity@weber.edu.
