OGDEN — With the federal shutdown continuing, Ogden City is looking to help furloughed federal workers during this time of need.

This week, the city announced what it is calling the “Ogden City Utility Bill Deferral Relief Program for Furloughed Federal Workers.”

Ogden City Communications Director Mike McBride told the Standard-Examiner in an email Friday that the program covers Ogden City provided utility services including water, sewer and garbage.

“The city is aware that federal workers who are furloughed are facing real and immediate financial hardships when paying their normal monthly expenses,” he said. “City leadership wanted to help offset the immediate financial burden by offering a deferred utility payment plan that offers relief from the pressures of bills that are due right away, helping individuals and families experiencing financial hardship by offering a program that allows them to choose where they are spending their money while furloughed. While this is not a waiver of fees, we intend for this program offer to provide relief in this time where many are experiencing unanticipated financial pressures due to the government shutdown.”

He said he was unaware of the city providing similar programs during past shutdowns.

In another email received Thursday evening, McBride noted that the program offers:

  • “No late fees or shutoffs for non-payment through March 2026. Extended Payment Plan through March of 2026 helps you catch up over time.
  • Minimum payment of $25 per month required to stay in the program.”

It is further added that if the furlough continues longer than expected, the city may extend the deadline.

McBride said the best way to apply or get more information is to call the city at 801-629-8321 and that applicants will need to supply their furlough letter to be eligible.

He said that this relief program isn’t the only one available to those impacted by the shutdown in Ogden.

“We know that many residents in our community are feeling the effects of the Federal Furlough, and we want to provide relief and connections to resources for those who need it most,” he said. “In addition to this program, we encourage individuals who are seeking additional assistance to refer to our community assistance program page for links to community partners who are ready to help with a wide range of services from rental assistance, food supply, mental health support, and job seeker resources.”
