On Thursday, UDOT Senior Communication Manager Mitch Shaw told the Standard-Examiner in an email that there will be a delay on construction of the 4400 South bridge due to its proximity to Ogden-Hinckley Airport.
“The 4400 South bridge over I-15 was originally intended to be closed until late November,” he said. “In order to hoist a crane or drive the steel bridge supports into the ground in such close proximity to the Ogden Airport runways, coordination with the FAA is required to complete an Aeronautical Study and Obstruction Evaluation. We were recently made aware of an additional study (known as the “Safety Risk Management” study) that, due to the complexity of the airspace, may require the Obstruction Evaluation to be complete before it can be reviewed. We do not currently know how long the delay will be on the 4400 South bridge, as that will depend on the FAA’s willingness to review both studies concurrently. But again, we don’t expect this to impact the overall timeline for project completion.”
He said UDOT is looking to make the delay as minimal as possible.
“We are working with the FAA to expedite the study reviews and move forward with construction of the 4400 South bridge as soon as possible,” he said.
Shaw noted that the 4400 South bridge replacement is part of a much larger project in Riverdale.
“The project will replace three bridges at 4400 South: one that carries local traffic over I-15 on 4400 South itself and two that carry I-84 traffic over 4400 South,” he said. “UDOT’s regular inspection of these bridges indicated it was time for all three to be replaced for the safety of the drivers on and below the bridges.”
He said that the other elements of the project are continuing to progress.
“Construction of the bridge walls for the twin bridges at I-84 is ongoing,” he said. “Traffic is detoured around 4400 South between Parker Drive and 1600 West; however, 4400 South is scheduled to open between Parker Drive and Cozy Dale Drive the first week of October when the construction of the bridge walls for the I-84 twin bridges is complete.”
Despite the setback on the 4400 South bridge, Shaw said he doesn’t anticipate it adversely impacting the overall project completion deadline.
“Overall, the project will not be delayed,” he said. “The twin bridges at I-84 have always been the schedule driver for this project and we still anticipate all work to be complete by summer of 2026, which has been the target completion date from the start.”
