Terri McCulloch, left, president of the Weber County League of Women Voters, lays out ground rules for a forum of Hooper City Council candidates at the Hooper Civic Center on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2023.With the primary election firmly in the rearview mirror, voters in several municipalities across Weber County are about to get an opportunity to hear from the candidates who advanced to the general election.
As it has in previous elections, the Weber County League of Women Voters is set to host a handful of candidate forums in the coming weeks, starting next week.
Terri McCulloch, president of the Weber County League of Women Voters, told the Standard-Examiner on Tuesday that the format will largely mimic previous forums they’ve hosted where all candidates are asked questions and given a set amount of time to answer.
“We just don’t do any rebuttals because we haven’t found that to be very successful,” she said.
She said the forums will be live-streamed on the group’s Facebook page and attempts will be made to put the streams on YouTube as well.
McCulloch said candidate forums are still a crucial part of the election cycle.
“It’s important for people to be able to see who is running for office and hear what they have to say,” she said. “It isn’t always details as much as what their attitude is and what they believe their job will be. Especially nowadays, we want people to represent us as a citizen, so it’s important that they stand in front of the constituents and answer questions they might have on a nonpartisan basis.”
The following forums have been scheduled with each night featuring that municipality’s full slate of candidates:
- Farr West — Monday, 6:30-8 p.m. — Farr West City Offices
