Gas prices fell in Ogden last week, but another surge is possible this week due to wholesale prices.

According to a news release from GasBuddy, a survey of 160 stations in Ogden revealed an average price of $4.13 per gallon, 2.8 cents lower than last week.

The cheapest station in Ogden checked in at $3.97 per gallon, while the most expensive was $4.19, a difference of 22.0 cents per gallon.

In Layton, the average price according to a Standard-Examiner survey of 11 stations was $4.14 per gallon, up 1.8 cents per gallon from a week ago.

The rise in the Layton survey was fueled by a sharp jump at Sam’s Club and Walmart. Sam’s Club’s price rose by 21 cents per gallon, while Walmart’s rose by 14 cents per gallon. Eight of the 11 Layton stations either stayed the same or dropped anywhere from 2 cents to 10 cents per gallon.

Gas prices throughout Utah were $4.14 per gallon, down 3.3 cents from a week ago, while gas prices nationwide were at $4.06 per gallon, up 11.8 cents from a week ago.

“Gasoline prices are poised for another jolt this week, with many inland states–including the Plains, Great Lakes, and parts of the Rockies– likely to see sharp increases as last week’s surge in wholesale costs has yet to be fully passed through to consumers,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said in the release. “In addition, some price-cycling markets could also see another round of increases. As a result, the national average could rise by double digits, potentially reaching the $4.20 to $4.35 per gallon range in the days ahead.

“Diesel prices continue to climb as well and now sit just 25 cents away from setting a new all-time record. Recent escalations between the U.S. and Iran have further intensified concerns about prolonged disruptions to global oil flows, keeping markets on edge. At this point, the trajectory of fuel prices remains highly uncertain and is largely contingent on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz– until that occurs, the risk of further increases remains firmly in place.”

The average price per gallon of gas in Ogden is up $1.44 since March 2, according to local pricing data.

The average national price of diesel is $5.576, up 20.7 cents from last week, the release stated.
