HUNTSVILLE — Snowbasin Resort is continuing to add international sporting events to its resume.

Having hosted events during the 2002 Winter Olympics — and with Alpine Skiing returning as part of the 2034 Winter Olympics — Snowbasin Resort can now add a major trail running event.

Last week, a press release announced that a UTMB World Series event titled Snowbasin by UTMB will be arriving on the resort’s trail system Sept. 10-12, 2026.

“The UTMB World Series is the premier global trail running circuit, uniting elite athletes and amateur runners across 60+ leading events in nearly 30 countries,” Snowbasin Resort Brand Manager Brooks Roe told the Standard-Examiner in an email Monday. “Launched in 2021 through a partnership between UTMB Group and The IRONMAN Group, the series is rooted in mountain culture, environmental responsibility, and fair play, and it serves as the official pathway to the sport’s pinnacle, the UTMB Mont-Blanc in Chamonix. Events like Snowbasin by UTMB give runners the opportunity to experience the UTMB standard close to home while earning qualification points toward the World Series Finals.”

He said the event will be a unique experience for the runners.

“The 58km and 28km routes at Snowbasin will combine sustained climbs with runnable alpine terrain, weaving through the resort’s historic landscape and open ridgelines with sweeping views of Ogden and the Great Salt Lake, especially vibrant during the fall,” Roe said. “Another unique aspect about this specific race is how naturally it ties Snowbasin’s alpine terrain to the Ogden community. Shortly after finishing, runners are back in town, grabbing dinner, meeting friends, or spending time along 25th Street, which gives the weekend a distinctly local feel rather than a remote resort experience.”

Plans are to make Snowbasin by UTMB an annual event. Following this year’s inaugural running, the event will shift to Sept. 16-18 in 2027.

Roe added that this fits right into Snowbasin Resort’s central role in major events over the years.

“Snowbasin has a proven track record of world-class event execution,” he said. “Beyond hosting downhill and combined events for the 2002 Winter Olympics, we’ve successfully partnered with diverse properties like Dew Tour, Spartan Race, and 29029 — each requiring different operational expertise, terrain management, and guest experiences.”

He added that this also shows that Snowbasin isn’t limited to being a destination for major winter events.

“UTMB demonstrates our venue’s unique versatility,” he added. “The fact that our mountain can challenge elite ultra-runners in summer and Olympic-caliber skiers in winter shows the range and quality of terrain we can offer. It’s this adaptability, combined with our infrastructure, operational experience, and proximity to Salt Lake City, that positions us well for 2034. Each event strengthens our institutional knowledge. We’re not just hosting events; we’re building the operational muscle memory and partnerships that make complex, multi-day international competitions run smoothly. UTMB adds another dimension to that experience base.”
