Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014 sits on display at Union Station in Ogden as part of its Westward bound Tour on Saturday, July 20, 2024.More details are now available on Union Pacific No. 4014’s coast-to-coast 2026 tour, including its time in Ogden.
On Tuesday, Union Pacific sent out a press release with additional details on the western leg of the ‘Big Boy’s’ nationwide tour, which is set to begin at the end of March.
“Union Pacific’s legendary Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, is steaming up for the western leg of its coast’to’coast tour to celebrate America’s 250th birthday with 27 whistle-stops and four public display days scheduled during its journey across four western states,” the release said. “The tour honors the crucial role railroads have played in building and unifying America while highlighting more than a century of industry innovation. Since 1862, when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act and created Union Pacific, railroads have connected the nation, driven industrial growth and helped to spark new industries.”
The release included the public display times for the previously announced visit to Ogden Union Station April 18-19. On April 19, the locomotive will be on public display from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., while the display will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on April 19.
Hope Eggett, museum administrator for the Museums at Union Station, told the Standard-Examiner in January that the museums will be open and free to the public during these visitation hours.
“We expect a huge turnout,” she said. “(In 2024), we had 16,000 people move through the indoor portion of our building, and a lot more outside.
The western leg of No. 4014’s coast-to-coast trip will begin March 29 in Cheyenne with the Big Boy crossing Wyoming, Utah and Nevada and heading as far west as Roseville, California, before returning to Cheyenne April 24 to prepare for the eastbound leg of its journey — details of which will be released at a later date.
In addition to its display in Ogden, No. 4014 will be making multiple whistle stops open to the public in Northern Utah. The locomotive will be on display twice in Morgan — April 2 from 11:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and April 20 from 9:30-10 a.m. — at the Morgan Depot located at 98 Commercial Street. Times and a location for a public display on April 2 in Salt Lake City will be released at a later date.
