SOUTH OGDEN — One person was arrested on two counts of attempted murder following a shooting incident in South Ogden that occurred Thursday night.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, James Joseph Rios was arrested on two counts of attempted murder.

According to a press release that was sent out by the South Ogden Police Department to members of the media, two people were shot in the area of 1300 East 5800 South in South Ogden. When officers arrived, they also came under fire but were not injured, the press release stated. Also according to the press release, responders from several other jurisdictions were called in to assist and the suspect was eventually convinced to surrender.

The status of the two victims is unknown at this time, the press release said, and attempts to reach the South Ogden Police Department for more information were unsuccessful.

According to the affidavit, “on 01/08/26, a South Ogden Police Officer was dispatched to the area of 1372 E 5800 S following a report of multiple individuals being shot at or near the listed address. Upon arrival, the responding officer reported that additional gunshots were fired in the officer’s direction.”

The affidavit notes that there was an exchange of gunfire between Rios and the arriving SWAT officers before he was eventually taken into custody.

“The suspect, identified as James Rios, was taken into custody by SWAT team members,” the affidavit continues. “A long rifle was recovered from inside the suspect’s residence. Additionally, an unspent rifle round was located in the suspect’s pocket at the time he was taken into custody.

“The suspect was interviewed after being advised of his rights per Miranda, understanding them, and agreeing to speak with investigators. James admitted to firing multiple rounds from inside his residence toward neighbors who lived across the street. The suspect stated he fired at the neighbors because the neighbor exited their residence after the suspect had warned them to remain inside. The suspect admitted he knew he had shot his neighbors, and watched the male neighbor fall to the ground, and then shot the wife, who was also outside. The suspect further admitted to firing additional rounds from inside his residence after law enforcement officers arrived on scene.”

A joint investigation is underway between the South Ogden Police Department and the Weber County Attorney Critical Incident Team.
