A Utah Department of Transportation press release from earlier this month stated that preliminary work is underway for SR-177’s 2.5-mile extension into West Point.

“Crews will begin preliminary construction activities along the project corridor from 700 South to 1800 North,” the release said. “Initial work will include vegetation and brush clearing, construction fencing, environmental mitigation activities, and other site preparation needed before major construction begins.”

UDOT Region 1 Senior Communication Manager Mitch Shaw told the Standard-Examiner in an email Monday that the preparation work has gone smoothly.

“Most of the work we’re doing now involves vegetation and brush clearing, putting up construction fencing, and other site preparation needed before major construction begins,” he said. “This preliminary work is expected to continue through the end of July, generally starting on the south end of the project and moving north. Full construction activities are anticipated to begin during the first week of August.”

He said this work will be ramping up come August.

“One of the first major construction activities people will see is pile driving near 700 South, for a bridge construction that will be located there,” he said. “This project will include an interchange at SR-193 with on and off ramps. Bridges will be built for the new road over 300 North, 800 North and 1300 North, and the project will end at an at-grade intersection at 1800 North.”

Shaw added that there will be warning of any major disruptions as construction gets underway.

“Residents in the area may notice increased construction activity, equipment, and crews in the area as work ramps up over the coming weeks,” he said. “Construction is generally scheduled Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Weekend work may occur as needed. If nighttime work becomes necessary, nearby residents will be notified in advance.”

He said it’s exciting to be able to move forward with the project’s next phase.

“This is going to be a 2.5 mile extension of SR-177 (also known as West Davis Highway) which is a 16-mile highway that currently stretches from Farmington to West Point, with more than 10 miles of trails,” he said. “The extension will go north to 1800 North in West Point and extend the Emigrant Trail from 1300 North to the Weber County line. This work will provide Utahns more choices in the way they travel.”
