According to a press release sent by the Weber County Sheriff’s Office late Tuesday afternoon, Cecil “Ted” Burrell, 87, Washington Terrace, died Monday of injuries sustained during the fire.

“At approximately 11:45 a.m. on Monday July 27, 2026, a grass fire was reported near I-84 and Adams Avenue Parkway,” the release said. “Winds and dry vegetation fueled the fire as it rapidly grew and moved towards homes in the area of 5700 S in Washington Terrace. Multiple fire and law enforcement agencies from surrounding cities and counties responded to handle the emergency. As fire crews battled the fire, law enforcement began evacuations on the south end of the city.

“During the initial response deputies and officers were going door-to-door evacuating residents when they learned of one resident that was unaccounted for. Deputies checked the subject’s home where they found thick smoke and ash around the home and a trailer on fire. Deputies and officers from other agencies located the male with severe burns. Deputies and other officers acted quickly and carried the male out of the home and away from the fire and transported the male to a nearby emergency room for medical care. Later that day, the male died from his injuries. The victim has been identified as 87-year-old Cecil (Ted) Burrell of Washington Terrace.”

A Weber County sheriff’s deputy was also injured during Monday’s fire. At a press conference Monday, Weber County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Sean Endsley confirmed that the deputy received minor injuries and had been treated and released.

“The Weber County Sheriff’s Office extends its sympathy to Cecil’s family and friends during this difficult time,” the release said. “We are thankful that deputies and officers acted quickly to rescue and get him to medical care. We also extend our gratitude to the neighboring law enforcement agencies and fire departments that responded.”

The release concludes by stating that no further information will be released.

Monday’s fire consumed around 45 acres on the south side of Washington Terrace. Damage was confined to a trailer and an adjacent structure.
