OGDEN — A stabbing suspect was fatally shot by an officer in Ogden Thursday morning.

The Ogden City Police Department held a press conference Thursday afternoon led by Ogden Chief of Police Jake Sube to discuss the incident.

“The incident occurred at approximately 6 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 2300 block of Madison Avenue,” he said. “Officers were dispatched to the apartment complex after receiving reports that a male was stabbing another male at this location. Due to the nature of the call, and understandably, numerous officers responded. When officers arrived, they were allowed into the apartment.”

He said that upon entering, officers observed an active struggle between two male individuals.

“Based on the preliminary information available at this time, one male appeared to be actively stabbing the other male when officers entered the apartment,” he said. “During the encounter, one officer fired his department-issued handgun, striking the suspect. The suspect — an adult male approximately 64-years-old — died as a result of the shooting.”

Sube said the stabbing victim was removed from the apartment and transported to a local hospital for treatment. As of Thursday afternoon, he was listed in critical but stable condition and continues to receive medical care. Sube was unable to identify the victim, how old they were or what, if any, connection they had to the stabbing victim.

“Preliminary information indicates that he suspect was a parole fugitive with an active parole warrant for his arrest,” he said. “His name is also not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.”

He said that the Weber County Critical Incident Investigation Team has been activated and is actively conducting an independent investigation into the incident and that there are no ongoing threats to the public.

“As part of our standard procedure, the involved officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the external investigation and any internal reviews,” he said. “It helps us ensure the integrity of the investigation and allows the officer to focus on their mental health and wellness during this challenging time. I want to express my confidence in the professionalism of our officers and their actions. Our officers are often required to make split-second decisions in dangerous and rapidly evolving situation and I know and understand what our officers face daily and am grateful for their willingness to put themselves in harm’s way to protect our community.”

Sube said that further information will be released as it becomes legally permissible to do so.
