According to Lt. Clint Bobrowski of the Layton Police Department, the crash was reported to 911 at 3:47 p.m. and took place near 2000 East Oak Hills Drive.
“Personnel from Layton Fire immediately began emergency medical care of all of the patients,” Bobrowski told the Standard-Examiner. “Three of the occupants were transported to local area hospitals with significant injuries, and despite lifesaving efforts, a fourth occupant of a vehicle did pass away on scene.”
Bobrowski said the cause of the crash was unknown but that Layton City Traffic Division officers were investigating with the hope of piecing the evidence together to determine it.
The crash continued a difficult day on Northern Utah roads.
The Weber County Sheriff’s Office announced in a media release that at 7:33 a.m. Friday, “Weber Area 911 received reports of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of northbound Interstate 15 and 2100 South” in West Haven.
According to the Sheriff’s Office’s media release, Sheriff’s Office deputies responded and were assisted by the Utah Highway Patrol and medical personnel from Weber Fire District, the Ogden City Fire Department and the Riverdale Fire Department.
“A white 1998 Dodge 1500 pickup was traveling west on 2100 South while a black 2022 Ford F-350 pickup was traveling east,” the release stated. “The Ford began making a left turn to enter the northbound I-15 on-ramp, and the two vehicles collided in the intersection.
“The collision caused the Dodge to leave the roadway and roll, coming to rest on its roof. The driver and sole occupant of the Dodge was found unresponsive in the driver’s seat. Medical personnel performed life-saving measures and extricated him from the vehicle. Unfortunately, due to the severity of his injuries, the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
The Dodge driver was identified as 62-year-old Paul Herrera of North Ogden, according to the release.
The driver and only occupant of the Ford was uninjured and cooperating, the release stated.
Assisting in the investigation was the Weber Metro C.R.A.S.H. team, according to the release.
Additionally, a crash occurred on northbound I-15 south of the I-84 interchange, closing the freeway at mile post 340 in Riverdale, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.
“Right now we’re working two major accidents, one here and then one on the west side of our city,” Bobrowski said. “It’s a rollover accident. We’re in the middle of the 100 deadliest days of the summer, and so as a police department, we support DPS’s message regarding traffic safety, reminding drivers to slow down, maintain their distance, wear their seatbelt and stay vigilant when they’re driving.”
